As the cooling season began, you probably imagined a worry-free summer for the air conditioner systems. However, some problematic markers signal that there may be trouble ahead. What would such signs look like? Here are some clear warnings that signal AC repair is needed.
If the system suddenly ceases to function, it may require a simple fix. It may result from a tripped circuit breaker, either at the electrical service panel or a breaker on the system’s air handler cabinet. While the system might be restored by flipping a breaker ON, the reason for the tripped breaker needs to be explored. If the breaker continues to trip, it certainly indicates a problem.
If the air blowing from the supply vents is warmer than normal or hot, this means that the air conditioning function has ceased, and an AC repair is in order. Again, the problem may be as simple as a clogged air filter or as serious as a loss of refrigerant. Replace a clogged air filter and observe the results. If the cooling is restored, hurrah!! If cooling is slow to return or does not return to normal, repairs may be required.
If it appears that certain spaces are not receiving air conditioning, it may indicate a reduction in air conditioning performance that requires a repair. This generally happens on the upper floors or in rooms at the end of long duct runs, far from the central air conditioning cabinet. If these spaces normally receive sufficient air conditioning, but it is suddenly reduced, it should be considered an indication of lost efficiency. Call a repair technician.
Normally, cooling cycles happen about 2 to 4 times per hour for about 5 to 8 minutes. The frequency and length of cycles are dependent upon the outdoor temperature and humidity. If the cooling cycles are excessively long or frequent, it indicates a loss of function or efficiency, which needs to be addressed by a technician.
Air conditioning functions in the background of normal life, and families rarely notice the slight noises made by the sounds emanating from the blower motor. However, when the air conditioner becomes obvious from the loud noises it makes, this indicates a problem that needs to be addressed. Since the blower motor is the only moving part, it is most likely to create loud sounds. A broken belt or worn motor bearings can create screeching or grinding noises, similar to worn brakes on a car. Frequent clicking from the thermostat or buzzing from the air handler cabinet are indications of stress and wear to electrical components.
When the air coming through the air conditioner takes on a moldy or earthy smell, the air becomes unhealthy and can cause breathing problems, trigger allergies, or asthma. Somewhere in the home, moisture is fostering mold or mildew growth; the spores from these fungi are known allergens and are spreading throughout the home during each cooling cycle. Do not ignore this—call a technician to uncover the problem area and stop the transportation of spores.
An air conditioner performs four functions
When the air conditioner’s function begins to fail, the relative humidity inside a home increases and is made evident by moist, sticky surfaces. That includes hard surfaces, such as furniture, flooring, and walls, and soft surfaces, such as human skin. High humidity is dangerous, promoting mold and mildew blooms. That is why homes that are shut up for long periods of time smell musty and unhealthy. Do not let your home become unhealthy. Call an AirPro Houston AC repair technician.
